Kings Fleet & Felixstowe Ferry
These are now the only vestiges of the vast harbour, known as Gosford Haven, which
occupied the south bank of the river in the Middle Ages before about 1500. It extended
through creeks and marshes right as far as Hemley, and was known as King's Fleet because
it sheltered the warships of medieval kings. Local history tells us that Edward III
assembled his expeditionary fleet within this harbour in 1346.
